#197 The aftermath...

What was the controversy??? What happened as a result??

Answer:

When Indian skipper MS Dhoni complained about inconsistencies about the 2.5m rule in the LBW dismissal appeal for Ian Bell's wicket during the India-England match in the group stage which eventually ended in a tie. The rules were subsequently revised and the umpires were given new guidelines. Subsequently, Sri Lanka captain, Kumar Sangakkara criticized the decision to alter 2.5m rule during an ongoing tournament.

It relates to the 2.5 rule in UDRS where a batsman can only be given out LBW, if they impact with the body is within 2.5m of the stumps.
Ian Bell in India v. Eng WC match was caught in crease this way, eventually given not out after the review.
M.Dhoni criticized this rule in public, causing ICC asking Dhoni to not to do it.

Ian Bell was given not out by Billy Bowden. Yuvraj convinced Dhoni for UDRS. Review showed that ball was in line and was hitting the stumps but because Bell was about 2.5m down the pitch and hawk-eye is said to be inaccurate in that case and the decision then lies with on-field umpire. Bell was walking but was stopped because Billy Bowden stayed with his initial decision i.e. Not Out. The crowd started chanting "Cheating". England ended up tied with India at the end.
